Walter Nordstrom

Walter D. Nordstrom, 88, of North Hampton passed away peacefully the morning of Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

He was born on March 22, 1937 in Newton, MA, son of the late Walter T. and Lillian (Woodside) Nordstrom.

Raised in Newton, Walter graduated from Newton North High School with the Class of 1954. He joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in September, 1954 and served and trained on submarines until June, 1961.

A man of many talents, Walter enjoyed several careers. He owned and operated a Texaco station in Newton, MA. He worked as a mechanic and assembled snowmobiles at McFarland Ford. He owned and operated New England Marine, diving and piloting his boat, the Modig up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Walter served as a Marine Superintendent for Morrison-Knudsen Company, managing (among other projects) the marine contingent of the construction of an important maritime harbor in Barranquilla, Columbia. He built the North Hampton Recycling Center and ran it for many years, earning the title of Man of the Year. He was the president and CEO of Nordstrom Enterprises and the Little River Tree Farm in North Hampton. The tree farm now serves as a public park, the Nordstrom Eltzroth Woods.

Walter worked with machines for much of his life. As a young man, he built and raced cars and snowmobiles. He was a tugboat captain for many years, and an avid SCUBA diver. Walter could often be seen on the back of one of his tractors mowing, smoothing, or moving things to be helpful. He enjoyed building, collecting, and shooting firearms, and he was a talented marksman. If you needed something fixed it was often said that if Walter didn’t have one, he could make one of whatever it was you needed.

Walter shared 41 years of marriage with his late wife, Mary Joan “Jody” Nordstrom, who predeceased him in 2024.

Surviving family members include: his son, Walt Nordstrom and his wife, Lisa; step-daughters, Kaaren Parma, Coleen Weeks, Brenda Smith; step-son, Mark Smith; sister, Lynda Ellingwood; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Walter also had many friends near and dear to his heart.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Judith Woodard.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
